Statement.
스스로의 몸 안은 자신의 눈으로 직접 볼 수 없다. 몸의 주체임에도 불구하고 인간은 자신의 몸 내부를 시각적으로 불투명하게 인식할 수밖에 없다. 그리고 몸 안에 관해 개인이 증명할 수 있는 이야기는 물리적, 생리적인 정보들로 한정된다. 그래서 환자가 자신의 몸과 병의 생김새를 상상하기 위해서는 외과 의사가 대변하고 의료 촬영기기가 비춰내는 오장육부의 시각 정보를 수용해야 한다. 하지만 실제 몸과 몸의 주체가 지각하는 몸 사이에 놓인 시각적 간극은 여전히 완벽하게 해소되지 않는다. 스스로의 눈과 스스로의 몸이 서로 마주 보며 소통할 수 없는 이러한 한계 상황은 여러 가지 모습을 보여준다. 신체 내부를 불완전하게 파악할 수밖에 없는 한계를 해소하려는 주체적인 인식 의지는 이러한 한계 상황에 고착된 개인의 무력함을 드러낸다. 그리고 외적 이상 증세가 없는 질병은 발병 여부의 낌새조차 제대로 파악하지 못한다는 개인의 자각을 일으킨다. 그럼에도 몸 안은 우리 각자의 상상으로 만들어지는 영역으로서 자유로운 시선으로 바라볼 수 있는 여지를 품는다.
A person can’t see inside his body - even though each human is an autonomous agent of the body, visibility of his own interior anatomy remains opaque. Moreover, the narratives that can be substantiated about the internal body is limited to the physical and physiological data. Hence, the patient needs to accommodate the visual data of various organs indicated by the surgeon and illuminated by medical recording devices in order to picture the images of his body and illness. And yet, the visual gap between the actual and the perceived body is still not thoroughly resolved. Such circumstance - under which one’s own eyes and body fails to interface and cross-communicate - conveys a number of messages. The initiative to perceive and tackle the limit, i.e. imperfect understanding of the internal body, betrays the person’s helplessness stuck in such a limited circumstance. In addition, diseases without any outward symptoms make the person self-aware of his inability to properly detect the slightest hints of a disease’s onset. Nevertheless, the interior body, as a realm created by our respective imaginative faculty, has room for discretion to look at it the way we see fit.
