To describe the barrier in visual cognition of the interior body, <Sheep Box> adopts the sheep box episode from the children’s tale “Little Prince” to show a sheep box represented through a surgical drape.

In the story of the Little Prince, the Little Prince asks the pilot to draw him a sheep. The pilot offers him a drawing of a box saying, “the sheep you want is in the box.” The sheep within the drawing of a cuboid with 3 holes exists through proxy observation by the Little Prince who exclaims, “it’s exactly the sheep I wanted!” and the imagination of individual readers. The patient gets the observation data from the surgeon who operated on his body, then exercise his imagination to understand what is inside. The person’s interior body exists through the patient’s imaginative faculty receiving the vicariously observed data. The sheep box made of a surgical drape is suggestive of the surgeon’s examination, peering into the body through a hole. Yet, the sheep inside the draped sheep box drawing can’t be confirmed directly through looking into the hole. Without the Little Prince and the surgeon around, a person’s internal body remains the most non-visible area to the agent of the body.





<양상자>는  ‘어린 왕자’ 동화의 양상자 일화를 차용해 수술포로 구현된 양상자를 그림으로 제시함으로써 신체 내부를 시각적으로 인식하는 상황의 한계를 이야기한다.

‘어린 왕자’ 동화에는 비행사에게 양을 그려달라는 어린 왕자가 등장한다. 비행사는 “네가 원하는 양은 이 상자 안에 들어있어.”라며 상자 그림을 제시한다. 구멍 3개가 뚫린 직육면체 상자 그림 안의 양은 “바로 내가 원하던 양이야.”라고 외치는 어린 왕자의 대리 관찰과 독자 개개인의 상상을 통해 존재한다. 환자는 자신의 몸을 수술한 외과 의사의 관찰 정보를 접한다. 그리고 상상을 통해 자신의 몸 내부를 이해한다. 개인의 몸 내부는 대리 관찰된 정보들을 받아들이는 환자의 상상력을 통해 존재한다. 수술포로 만든 양상자는 수술포 구멍 너머로 몸 내부를 들여다보는 의사의 관찰 경험을 연상시킨다. 하지만 그림으로 그려진 수술포 양상자는 구멍에 눈을 대고 그 안의 양을 직접 확인할 수 없다. 어린 왕자와 외과 의사가 곁에 없는 개인의 몸 안은 몸의 주체에게 가장 비가시적인 영역으로 존재한다.
